To maximize the size of your pumpkin you should only keep one-two fruit on each plant. This repositioning should only occur in the afternoon when the plant is more limber! (trust me on this one!) 9) Cull It could be as much as 2’ off the ground at maturity. You will eventually need to support this portion of the vine as it grows with the pumpkin. This allows the shoulders of the pumpkin to have more room as it grows and reduce vine stress. 8) RepositionĪs the tiny pumpkin grows, gently (and I mean gently!) maneuver the fruit at a right angle to the stem. This pollen can come from the same plant as the female or other plants to introduce new genetics. The female flower should then be tied up or covered to prevent any other introduction of unknown pollen. If you choose to hand pollinate, you should choose about 3-5 fresh male flowers, remove the petals and then gently ‘paint’ the pollen all over the ovaries of the female flower until there is a good coating of pollen. If you choose not to hand pollinate, the bees will do a good job for you. ![]() This should be done early in the morning while the pollen is fresh and female are most receptive to pollen. Many growers will hand pollinate these females to control the genetics in the pumpkin. The female flowers are easy to detect, as they will have a small pumpkin at the base of the flower. This usually occurs around the end of June/early July. Usually the best location to pollinate a fruit is at about 10’ out on the main vine. When the first female flowers appear, it’s time to think about pollinating. Be careful not to bury the terminal buds when doing this. This promotes extra rooting at each leaf inter node. 6) Dig TrenchesĪs the plant is growing, you should dig trenches about 3”-4” deep ahead of each vine (main and secondary) as the vines lay in the trenches, bury the vines. This keeps the plant neat and tidy and easy to manage. This involves running your main vine out and keeping only the secondaries at a 90 degree angle to the main stem. Most growers choose the ‘Christmas tree’ style. Once the main vine is established, you will want to begin pruning your plants. Remove the cold frame when all possibilities of frost have gone. Some growers use small heaters or lights to provide heat during the cold nights, depending on your cold frame this may or may not be necessary. Water occasionally to keep moist, but not too wet. Remember to open your cold frames on warm days to avoid heat stress to the plants. Handle these plants with care when transplanting! A mild fertilizer can be added at the time of transplanting, but avoid over fertilizing early in the plants life. Plant the seedling in your cold frame with the fold of the first true leaf pointing away from the direction you want the plant to go. ![]() ![]() A day or two of acclimating to the outdoor temperature wouldn’t hurt the plants prior to actual planting. Once the seedlings are beginning to show the first true leaf (the two cotyledons appear first, the first true leaf will appear in the middle.) it’s time to transplant the plants outdoors in your cold frame. While you are waiting for the seeds to germinate, you should put small cold frames out in your garden where you intend to grow the plants. Seedling heat mats are the best source of heat for this process. These pumpkin seeds germinate best when the soil is kept at around 85 degrees. Plant the seed pointed side down in your planting medium about 3/4”-1” deep. Soak the seeds for approximately 1 hour prior to planting. You should use an emery board to file the edges of the seed in improve germination. Start the seeds indoors in late April/early May in 4”-6” peat pots or other suitable container. Good tilth is also important, avoid compaction. A good amount of organic matter in the soil is beneficial and desirable. Evidence of agricultural activity doesn’t return to the landscape for at least 600 years. The blast also may have stripped away once-fertile soils and coated agricultural lands with superheated brine ejected from the Dead Sea. Their research was presented in 2017 at an annual meeting of The Meteoritical Society.Īrchaeologists say the explosion instantly devastated hundreds of square miles north of the Dead Sea, destroying 100 percent of nearby cities and towns. And when the blast occurred, it caused massive devastation, according to a group of Christian scientists who’ve studied the site for more than a decade. Located in what is now Jordan, some scientists believe Tall el-Hammam was the biblical city of Sodom. Roughly 3,700 years ago, a meteor may have exploded over the Dead Sea city of Tall el-Hammam. Here, we’ve compiled a list of some of the most compelling and captivating accounts.Īround 1700 B.C.: meteor explosion may have destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah If these documents accurately portray meteor fireballs, then somewhere between hundreds to tens of thousands of people have been killed by falling space rocks. Yet their presence in official histories and similarities to modern accounts lead some scientists to believe at least some of the events must have really occurred.Ĭhinese histories in particular are rich with accounts from government scholars and astronomers that document times when “a star fell.” These records were kept consistently across many provinces and passed from dynasty to dynasty, chronicling significant events spanning thousands of years. In most cases, there’s no physical evidence to confirm these stories. Researchers mining ancient texts in recent decades have discovered that historical records are surprisingly rich with accounts of apparent deaths due to falling space rocks. However, if ancient scholars can be trusted, humans haven’t always been so lucky. Yet there are no reports of injuries from Poland on that day. If someone flew over a populated area, dropping hundreds of thousands of stones from the sky, you might expect at least one person to get hurt. “The citizens of Warsaw gazed, petrified with fear, on the rapid approach of an immense ball of fire, which burst over their heads with a noise and shock such as never before had been seen or heard on the surface of the Earth,” mineral expert Lewis Feuchtfanger reported at a scientific conference in 1868. It’s the largest meteorite fall on record. The biggest recovered meteorite (a fragment of a space rock that makes it to the ground) weighed 20 pounds (9 kilograms). 30, 1868, a meteor exploded outside a town called Pultusk, near Warsaw, Poland, creating a literal meteor shower: More than 100,000 stones fell from the sky. One of the most recent and well-known examples occurred in Chelyabinsk, Russia, in 2013, when a house-sized asteroid exploded over the city and injured some 1,200 people. On many occasions, space rocks have exploded over populated areas and sent thousands of meteorites raining down. But that’s not to say we haven’t come close. However, researchers still have not found a single confirmed case of death by space rock. “It’s only been in the last half century or so that we’ve even realized that such a thing could happen.” “I do strongly suspect that stats on ‘death by asteroid’ have been severely undercounted through human history,” NASA Planetary Defense Officer Lindley Johnson told Astronomy via email. And with those odds, you’d expect people to get killed by meteorites fairly often. Based purely on statistics, researchers estimate that a space rock should strike a human roughly once every nine years. But every once in a while, these objects actually strike humans and our property. ![]() Our planet is vast, so meteorites typically don’t concern us. Every day, shooting stars fail to recognize a boundary between space and Earth, dropping rocks from above - and often with dramatic results. Instead, stars and galaxies are scattered through the cosmos at distances so great they’re incomprehensible to us.īut not all celestial phenomena exist so far away. The truth, of course, is that no such sphere exists. ![]() To us, the stars appear fixed on a so-called celestial sphere that encapsulates our entire earthly existence. When we stargaze, we bask in photons that have traveled for many millennia before reaching our eyes. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This will set either the fill or stroke to None, depending on which you have active at the time. Simply select the object in question and hit the Slash key ( / ). Also are you assigning the new keyboard shortcut to just the Unlock command (which means you’ve changed the preference as Mike described in the last paragraph, or to the Unlock All command. If you have an InDesign object such as a text box, or an image frame in your document and you wish to remove any stroke and fill it currently has, you can do it with a quick keystroke. If you tried to use Shift Q while editing (some other unlocked) text frame, you’ll just get a capital Q there. Press Shift+Alt (Windows) or Shift+Option (Mac OS) > select Object > Unlock All. To unlock all locked content on a page, choose Object > Unlock. If you drop the guide onto the pasteboard, it spans the pasteboard and spread it will act as a page guide if you later drag it onto a page. To unlock an individual object, click the lock icon on the bounding box of the selected object. Seems like it’d be better to do maybe Option-Q, which would keep it in the left hand like you want, and work in all contexts of whatever you’re doing in ID.įor the Unlock shortcut, kind of the same problem. Do one of the following: To create a page guide, position the pointer inside a horizontal or vertical ruler and then drag to the desired location on the target spread. So are you just careful to only use the Q to Object > Lock when you have an object selected with a selection tool? That works. Then I thought, oh maybe he means he’s using Command-Q instead of the default Command-L, but that would override the default setting for Command-Q and so you’d have to use the menu File > Quit whenever you needed to quit? Another way to lock objects is to use InDesign's Layers panel to individually lock any item on the page. With InDesign you can make all things print design like books, business cards, brochures and interactive documents. To create a new layer and open the New Layer dialog box, hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) as you click the New Layer button. Jack, like the idea of making left-hand friendly keyboard shortcuts, but I’m puzzling over Q and Shift-Q! Can you clarify.įor example, the “Q” shortcut won’t work for Lock if you have the Type tool selected, because then you’ll enter a “q” in the text. To unlock everything on the spread, press Command key - Wikipedia+Opt+L (Ctrl+Alt+L). Adobe InDesign doesn’t need an introduction because it’s the industry-standard for all major print design and everything layout. To create a new layer at the top of the list, hold down Ctrl+Shift (Windows) or Command+Shift (Mac OS) as you click the New Layer button. ![]() ![]() ![]() He led all of baseball with a 1.071 OPS and led the AL in on-base and slugging percentage.
